Private Direction

You may have arrived here looking for a coach, mentor or simply someone independent to think with.

But what you may need first is a clearer picture.

Private Direction is for capable men who know something needs to change, but cannot yet see clearly what that change should be.

You may have achieved a great deal and still know something is off. You’re carrying responsibility, keeping the wheels turning — yet finding it surprisingly difficult to work out what needs to change for you.

From inside your present position, some things are just harder to see.

What is Private Direction?

A private, independent relationship with one man outside your world. No employer in the room, no agenda but yours, and the room to look properly at what may be missing from your present picture.

So, the aim is simple: improve the picture, put you on solid ground and get you moving in a direction you can embrace.

There’s a structure to our work, but it is yours to drive. You will not be pressed into a framework or contained within a single method. You’ve had quite enough of that.

You remain in command. I help you see more of the ground.

We’ll ladder down and work out what’s really going on. We’ll look at your natural strengths and instincts, and how they could work with the skills and experience you’ve accumulated over the years.

Then we’ll look at your horizons and explore opportunities without pre-judging them. We’ll see what instinctively feels right, what fits your world and what's worth properly testing.

Then we move. We assess the feedback, adjust and stay agile.

Once you’re moving again, you may need me from time to time. Or the job is done and you may not need me at all.

Confidentiality

Your privacy must be protected. I will never divulge anything outside the confines of our relationship. I will never ask you for attention-seeking, self-promotion testimonies and you certainly won't find me on TikTok. Our agreement, on this basis, is sacrosanct.

What it isn't.

It isn’t therapy and it isn’t another coaching formula.

It isn’t about showing me how smart you are, how responsible you are, or how accomplished you are. It isn’t about validation, and you don’t have to perform, impress or prove anything to me.

I already get it. You have plenty of strengths and skills. We’re going to give them room without the added pressure of approval.

What can you expect from me?

First, honesty. That means facing the reality of things that may be hard for you to hear at first. But you won’t face it alone.

I won’t keep reflecting back on you with question after question. I’ve been there, done that and quite frankly sometimes guidance is the answer. I will give you my judgement when it is useful and praise when it is genuinely due.

Before anything else I need to know you and your landscape. The real one of course, not the surface you show to others.

A proper sitrep.

Think of me as the intelligence section to your own command centre. I am there to improve the picture. To notice what may be outside your current field of view, challenge what needs challenging and help you make a better next move.

A real person across the table

Judgement that's been paid for through the full experiences of my professional and private life. I’ll listen, observe, challenge and help you see what your current position may make difficult to see, then give you my honest view from the outside looking in.

That is what this is built on.

My focus is on the questions of a man’s life.

Work, identity, decisions, pressure, meaning, direction and the things we often carry alone. Things we either dare not speak about, or simply cannot speak properly to another person.

If something goes beyond my lane, then I’ll refer you.

The engagement

Private Direction is a three-month engagement consisting of six private conversations of approximately 80–90 minutes, with feedback and support between them.

Each conversation has an agenda and an objective. You will normally leave with something specific to do, explore or test before we meet again.

What happens next matters. You report back on what you did, what happened and what you noticed. I review that properly, and what we learn informs the direction and objective of our next conversation.

So the work builds. We have waypoints, we can see whether we are making progress, and we adjust when reality tells us something different.

The fee is £3,250.
